I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn't. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life.

Add a CommentI loved this book... my first adult type book and I loved the mystery that was involved with it
Good book, great character personalities. Although I probably won't read the other books in the series, I thought that this book was excellent. Flavia rocks!
great book! Read the other three books in the series they are just as good.
Although it was an enjoyable read, it's not exactly what I was looking for in a mystery novel. The answer can't be deduced without the highly improbable and chancy events at the end...but no matter, the story is worth reading just for Flavia.
Pretty good read.....Flavia de Luce is a hoot! I like the humor throughout the novel as well as the insight this little 11 year old girl has in life....
Oh, Flavia was delightful to read along with. Absolutely uproarious. I laughed. Out loud. Several times. No doubt it was a devious plot by the conniving 11-year-old to embarrass me in public. And it this regard, it worked. The mystery, on the other hand, was unsatisfying. I felt that Flavia stumbled upon the answer at the end, rather than making the logical deductions that would have allowed her to figure it all out before--well, you'll have to read it to figure out what. So in this regard, the book was disappointing. Hit and miss I guess. If you're looking for a good laugh and an entertaining read, this book will supply. If you're in it more to challenge yourself to solve an intriguing puzzle before the detective does, look elsewhere. But really, even then, you must meet Flavia at least once.
This book won a major award, that's why I read it. It was okay. Not stellar. Some novelty in the fact that the protagonist is a young girl, but that doesn't carry the weight of the book.
Precocious, feisty and often wacky little detective.
An enjoyable story that leads to a fun series of books. It takes a while to get past the fact that the main character is a disobedient 11 year old girl, whose attitudes sometimes defy belief. Don't let that stop you from enjoying a thoroughly good read. Many thanks to the Author and others that recommended this book.
Initially I wondered why I had picked a 'juvenile' book. Was I ready to read a story from the perspective of an 11-year old who is passionate about chemistry? But Flavia was delightfully wicked, outrageously and deliciously clever...and I laughed aloud several times at her point of view. Anyone who has siblings and/or an inventive, passionate mind would love Flavia I'm sure.
