"Once upon a time there was a young psychiatrist called Hector who was not very satisfied with himself. . . . And so he decided to take a trip around the world, and everywhere he went he would try to understand what made people happy or unhappy."

Hector travels from Paris to China to Africa to the United States, and along the way he keeps a list of observations about the people he meets. Combining the winsome appeal of The Little Prince with the inspiring philosophy of The Alchemist , Hector's journey around the world and into the human soul is entertaining, empowering, and smile-inducing--as winning in its optimism as it is wise in its simplicity.

What seems like a very simple, short and sweet story, has a lot of hidden depths. I loved this, and it made me stop and think about life, which is always a good thing in our fast-paced world. Looking forward to reading the next book.

Does the library plan to get the original French-language version?

It was a cute book. Easy to read. Had those life lessons that you always need to hear over and over, but presented in an entertaining way.
One disclaimer. I watched the movie after I read the book and was utterly disappointed, bad adaption for what could have been great. If I had not read the book first, I probably would have enjoyed it.

Enjoyed travelling with Hector in his pursuit of happiness. A simple read, the literary implement of understating the obvious respected the reader's intelligence. Delightful. Looking forward to Hector's other pursuits.

Even though the writing is simple, it gives the reader alot to reflect on in their own lives. I am looking forward to reading the other books about Hector's pursuits.

Even though I have this book listed under "completed", I really couldn't get past the first few chapters. I just found the narration very condescending.

I had to read this book for my freshman orientation book to college last year. While I heard some people say they didn't enjoy it so much, I have to say that I really loved it. It really makes you stop and think about things around you and how and why you do things.
The 2nd book, Hector and the Secrets of Love is also worth the read. Still waiting on the 3rd book to be translated and released here...

A surprisingly affecting short book filled with real insights disguised as a naive little work. I took a great deal of pleasure from this easily read book. Although it appears to simply be a charming and undemanding feel-good read, there are depths lurking here if you care to put the time into thinking about it.

If you like it, be sure to read Hector and the Secrets of Love as well...

An interesting read that follows Hector, a psychiatrist, as he searches for the true meaning of happiness. His search takes him around the world where he meets all sorts of people.
