During her unparalleled fifty-year history, Barbie has been the doll that some people love-and some people love to hate. There's no question she's influenced generations, but to what end? Acclaimed nonfiction author Tanya Lee Stone takes an unbiased look at how Barbie became the icon that she is, and at the impact that she's had on our culture (and vice versa). Featuring passionate anecdotes and memories from a range of girls and women, a foreword by Meg Cabot, and original color photographs, this book explores the Barbie phenomenon in a brand-new light.

I really like Fuzzy Wuzzy's comments below.

(*Lyrics excerpt from Aqua's "Barbie-Girl" song*) - "I'm a Barbie-girl... In a Barbie-world... Life in plastic... It's fantastic!"

To date (since 1959) - Mattel, Inc. has sold (get this!) over 1 billion Barbie dolls, worldwide.

Believe it, or not - This particular doll (like no other before, or since) has had such a significant impact on the social values of women by conveying characteristics of female independence.

Over the many years - Barbie has, indeed, been royally parodied (to the delight of many) in film, music, and television.

Impressively compiled by author, Tanya Lee Stone - "The Good, the Bad, and the Barbie" is part biography (both of the doll and her inventor, Ruth Handler) and part exploration of the cultural phenomenon that is all Barbie (from the top of her empty head to the tips of her twinkling toes).

So, whether you love Barbie, or you hate her - This book (containing both colour and b&w stills) is an enjoyable and informative read on all counts (just ask Ken about it).
