The island community of Pontypool, Ontario, is a remote, cold, peaceful place where people live relatively uneventful lives day-by-day; Les Reardon, for example is checking his property for poachers while he thinks about tonight’s opening performance of Pontypool Players’ King Lear (directed by himself), and tries not to dwell upon the various personal problems that have recently beset him. A few minutes later, a hunter on Les’ land is having his face chewed off, and nothing will ever be the same again. An epidemic virus terrorizes the inhabitants, causing them to strike out on murderous rampages. The virus is caught through conversation and, once contracted, leads its host on a strange journey into another world where the undead roam the streets of the smallest towns and largest cities, hungry for human flesh.

Ugh, this is a revolting book. Dark, perverse and disturbing in a non-entertaining way. I saw the movie Pontypool and enjoyed it. So I thought I would read the book. But between the disjointed writing, and the content itself, I was very disappointed.

Loving the unique, strange, and chilling movie, I was looking forward reading the book that inspired the movie. Too bad it inspired it in only the broadest sense.
I got the sense that the book was written by a first-year English major that was trying much too hard, mixing realism and magical aspects in jarring ways - leaving me confused and scrambling to follow the thread of the plot.
I've loved other surreal works; A Clockwork Orange, The Naked Lunch, but Pontypool is just puzzling and vague. Worst book I've read in the last couple years - though I'd love to see a University English class try to defend or unravel it....
