A griping story about passion and duty set in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) during the twenties at a time of political upheaval when nationalist forces and labour unions were on the rise. It examines homosexuality (called 'inversion' during the times portrayed) in the face of extreme hetrocentricity. I think it is a good book to show straight people the pain that many homosexuals experience though the book is about much more than that. I felt the true hero of the story was the servant whose duty followed his heart. It is a touching and engrossing story well worth reading.
