Father O'Malley is the new priest at the Church of St. Dominic in a working-class New York City neighborhood. He fails to make a good first impression with crusty old Father Fitzgibbon, who doesn't approve of O'Malley's golf playing, baseball game attending, or fishing. But O'Malley starts spiffing up the church and its neighborhood: dealing with the church mortgage, which is in arrears, and straightening out the street gangs by getting the boys to help him start a choir. Romantic matches are made; neighborhood busybodies are appeased. Many songs are joyfully sung, and O'Malley even arranges a big surprise for Fitzgibbon, who's homesick for Ireland.

Fantastic movie. Very fun, the songs are great, the dances are great, and it's just good clean entertainment. Such a treat to see some of the best in action!

You can find bigotry and/or racism in ALL of U.S. history if you are a liberal - Democrat. If you find the movie offensive THEN DON'T WATCH IT! Just recently I read someone had also found bigotry and racism in the Christmas movie White Christmas. There is no living in a PERFECT WORLD!

This movie is cringe inducing in its portrayal of race relations; I could hardly believe anyone thought it would be a good idea to have Bing Crosby dress up in blackface to sing a song praising Abe Lincoln. There are other blackface numbers, for no particular point. Moreover, the treatment by the white dancers and singers, especially Bing Crosby, of African American servants in the inn is classic racism unawares. I find it all appalling. The script isn't even worth sitting through; it's predictable and slow. The only good parts, in my opinion, are the dance sequences featuring Marjorie Reynolds and Fred Astaire. No plot needed there -- it's just a joy to watch them. But even they can't save this lost cause of a movie.

GREAT 1942 Irving Berlin romantic musical film starring Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, and Marjorie Reynolds. Quite an interesting peak at 1942 United States for those of us who weren't born then.
Lots of great dance musical sequences, including terrific opening dance number with Bing and Marjorie. Film does include a 'blackface' (pretty much can't do that any more) number holiday tribute to Abe Lincoln on his Feb 12 birthday. Louise Beavers does have yet another side role as housekeeper Mamie.
The out of town inn only having shows on holidays sets up lots of big stage numbers with great costumes, etc. Marjorie Reynolds is terrific doing 'Be Careful, It's My Heart' on Valentine's Day. I did notice they suppressed the loud tap sounds during the dance to not distract.
She was new to me, but I also enjoyed Virginia Dale as Lila who completes the romantic pairing foursome.
Oh, I do notice that some of the comments here are actually for film 'Going My Way' which was part of a two film DVD, but the DVD I checked out only has 'Holiday Inn'; blackface, but no Irish accents...

With sentimental schmaltz and Irish accents to spare, director Leo McCarey’s fluffy little Catholic confection went on to win no fewer than seven Academy Awards including the coveted “Best Picture” statuette. But despite its cloying sweetness this still ranks as one of Hollywood’s golden oldies and Crosby’s crooning renditions of seven songs including “That’s an Irish Lullaby”, “Swinging on a Star”, and “Ave Maria” (accompanied by opera great Risē Stevens and the Robert Mitchell Boy’s Choir) are memorable if not exactly earth-shattering. The real miracle however is that Crosby’s somnolent performance managed to steal the Best Actor Oscar from the more deserving Barry Fitzgerald who had to settle for the “supporting” category.

"Holiday Inn" is a wonderful film! If anyone enjoyed the movie "White Christmas", "Holiday Inn" is sure to become another favorite classic. Bing Crosby's vocal numbers will captivate the audience, and Fred Astaire's dance numbers are sure to entrance the viewers. Going through every holiday, this unique plot is creative and enjoyable. The whole family can enjoy watching this film together, and it is especially enjoyable to watch during Christmas time.

"Going My Way" is very nicely done. While the plot is slow, it is the characters the screenwriter wishes to focus on. Father O'Malley's tender heart and unique ways of helping those in need is sure to delight the audience. Also, the musical numbers are very beautiful. This is a great movie to remind the audience of the truth, "One person can make a difference," and sometimes that difference begins with a smile.
