Award-winning poet Anne Carson joins the Vintage Canada list with this stunning work, both novel and poem, both unconventional re-creation of an ancient Greek myth and wholly original coming-of-age story set in the present. Geryon, a young boy who is also a winged red monster, reveals the volcanic terrain of his fragile, tormented soul in an autobiography he begins at the age of five. As he grows older, Geryon embarks on a journey that unleashes his creative imagination to its fullest extent.

Small type hard to read.

Read this at the Schwarzman Building.
A stunning yet highly unconventional "novel in verse," this book shows Carson's major conceit, and indeed, forte - the reinvention of Greek myth to create new works. (I'll be reading Red Doc>, Nox, and Antigonick over the course of the summer.)

SPIRIT RULES SECRETLY ALONE THE BODY ACHIEVES NOTHING
is something you know
instinctively at fourteen and can still remember even with the hell in your head
at sixteen. They painted this truth
on the long wall of the high school the night before departing for Hades.
