khyber, age 11 lives in regent park with her mother and her twin brothers in a small, cramped apartment.
her brothers' autism has been made fun of by her classmates countless times and khyber has fought for it.
but khyber still has friends.
few but very good friends.
x is one of them.
x doesnt really live anywhere, she lives the streets and she doesnt mind.
as long as she has khyber
so when x goes missing, khyber leaves home, not knowing exactly when she will return, in search of x.
"Eleven-year-old Khyber lives with her mother and autistic brothers in a low-income area in Toronto. In addition to her problems at school (she skipped twice and doesn't fit in), she deals with her mother's decision to send her brothers to a group home. Khyber gets expelled from school for name calling (menacing skinheads)and for a false accusation of vandalism, and a search for her best friend, "X." Khyber loves her family and gladly goes beyond what one would expect of a child in search to help her mother and "X." Her friends are an odd assortment of characters, all adults. There are many quirks and issues to make this book believable. Some aspects of the plot are far-fetched, and everything falls into place just a little too neatly at the end. On the other hand, all of the characters are real and natural. Khyber is a likable protagonist and the readers will appreciate how she copes with her brothers and mother." (Novelist Review)
