In the early 1990s, Bo Wah Chuen, merely 40 years old, has already been promoted to the top management position of the British East India Company in Hong Kong, then a crown colony. Looking back over his beginning, he was raised in a poor, boat-dwelling family of Tanka fishermen - although he doesn't look anything like pure Chinese - and had not received proper education until he reached adulthood. Coming from such humble background, Chuen was met with a great deal of ridicule and discrimination due to class and racial biases. But through his own hard work, the lowly office assistant strove to climb up the ranks and eventually became the multinational trading giant's first ever Chinese taipan. Still, despite his extraordinary achievements, Chuen is confused where his root truly lies...

A decent story which turned into a boring movie. Because of the subtitles I just could not snooze on the couch. What a waste of my time.

A powerful and gripping story of a mixed race [Chinese-British] man, striving upwards from the bottom of the socioeconomic ranks of Hong Kong, masterfully nuanced acting by Aaron Kwok. A mixed youth - - in forcibly mixed cultures [during the time of the Imperial East occupation of Hong Kong], with the prejudiced behaviors against him from both the Chinese side and British side. The interplay between Aaron Kwok [Bo Wah Chun] and his mother [extraordinarily acted by Hee Ching Paw] induced heartbreak, as did the acting of his wife, Charlie Yeung.
A classic drama formula, but one told anew - - a real masterpiece! ! !
I thank everyone involved with the production of this great movie!

region 3 dvd -- Finally watched it in Netfix. Story spanned over 50 some odd years following the rise of an orphan from a most humble beginning as a boy living in the floating city to become the most powerful Taipan in Hong Kong. Unfortunately there was little on the genius of the man to warrant his unlikely meteoric rise.

An eye-opener into the culture of the floating people to many of us native-born and grown up in Hong Kong on land. The film seems quite realistic about an epoch of time of Hong Kong under the British reign.

Good enough entertainment but it is trying to tell to many stories at once across a long period of time and kind of gets lost here and there. This one could have been better.

This movie was a little disjointed... took some liberties skipping through time, and towards the end I felt like it was a movie that had lost track of what it was supposed to be about. Was this about the main character's overcoming the odds to become successful? His relationship with his equally lowborn wife compared to a more sophisticated woman? His mother?

It was a watchable movie, but would have been better if the message wasn't so muddled.

Faith, Dedication, Family, Perseverance, Conviction indeed a film that will be cherished for all that are needle in a haystack !!!

Watchable but too little material on how he became a Taipan.

Us boat people are lucky, we've seen all the beautiful sunsets in the world.
They called us "Dànjiā." We lived in narrow boats ... According to folklore when disaster happens at sea the devil will substitute one life...for another.
Fion: You know I have a Master degree in architecture when I was in LA. After that, my father asks me to come here to help.
What about you?
Bo: I'm nothing compared to you. You're like same deity in the sky. I'm just like an ant.
Fion: You mean like a fish?
Bo": That's right ... I'm just a parrot-fish.
Custom Agent: You're a subject of a British colony. so by definition you're British. Reality is you have no nationality.
Bo: Then... what am I?
Agent: I'm afraid I don't have answer for that. Sorry, that's a history for you.
