Anne and George (Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant) are a couple in their 80s who are enjoying their retirement, but that changes when, after an operation following a stroke, Anne is left wheelchair-bound and paralysed. Although she expresses her wish to die, even going so far as to make an attempt at taking her own life, George tries to remind her of the beauty and worth of life itself and the love that they share for each other.

A commentary on how precious life is. How everything can be seemingly normal, happy one day and completely different the next. A story about intense love that will do anything to honor their mate. The challenges that come with that and the commentary of the outside world on what is appropriate or inappropriate - what should or should not be. Thought provoking. What would you do for the person you love?

This movie is about the suffering that can be introduced by severe, protracted medical and mental problems--suffering of the patient, and the suffering of the loved one who tries to offer loving support.

The acting is superb, the film is high quality, and I recommend it to you though it will leave you saddened. A genre of problem that can hit any of us is portrayed with brilliance, but the solutions remain in the shadows, ellusive even to the kind and well educated family we follow.

Unforgettable film

I thought this was a moving portrait of an elderly couple- it's serious stuff crafted by one of the great European directors currently working in film.

This is a 2012 French drama written and directed by the Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke.
The film focuses on an elderly couple, Anne and Georges, who are retired music teachers with a daughter who lives abroad.
Anne suffers a stroke which paralyses her on the right side of her body.
What a depressing and heart-breaking movie it is!
Yes, it is about love.
What Georges did to his deteriorating wife is definitely an act of love, if not an act of God.
Superb are the performances of the elderly actors---Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva.

Warning. This is definitely not a first-date movie. Amour is well acted but don't expect a Hollywood ending. This is harsh reality portrayed in all of its beauty and ugliness. The movie crawls at a snail's pace towards its logical conclusion. It is quite challenging to watch at times and it is remarkable the movie ever got made. Due to the needlessly extended length of the movie I could only give it two stars. The ending was a bit too cryptic for my liking as well. Watch it and judge for yourself.

well acted, and a thoughtful treatment of the subject but very very slow,

It might have been a good story but the English sub-titles were inadequate. Gave up on the film 1/4 way into it.

Who to blame for the antiseptic system for the elders IN THE CURRENT SOCIETY of the USA and Europe?
Trintignant still strong, ni se qua then ni se qua now! He and Emmanuelle acting under the direction of Haneke a triumph .
Amour is the reality that is there waiting for us.
