Totally underrated WWII historical fiction. Loved this novel!

Well written period piece. It was rather a sad story but highly engaging. Not a 'feel good' read but definitely worth reading!

Beautifully written. Juliet Dufresne is an engaging young protagonist. The story drives home the tragedy and insanity of war and draws a vivid picture of its impact on the lives of our parents or grandparents whether they participated directly or suffered the loss of family members.

After prodding through the first few disappointing chapters, so uncharacteristic of this author, once the story starts to unfold it is an unforgettable page-turner to the very end - true to Ms. Vanderbes' proven style. With warmth, compassion, dignity, an incredible amount of research, and down-and-dirty realism, she weaves a story so compelling and irresistible that it leaves the reader wanting more and more.

Often novels start out well and then go downhill. This book, the opposite. The tension and complexity build steadily as we follow the progress of an army nurse, her medical unit trailing a division chasing the Germans up into the mountains of Italy. The author writes clever, engaging dialogue; the characters ring true. She is at the same time focused and realistic in her depiction of the goriness, gray areas and confusion of war. This is a perfect book for those who love novels set during the WWII period, as well as fiction in a medical setting.

An amazing and awesome book! The descriptions of the army medical units and hospitals were quite accurate. Being stationed in a medical unit in northern Italy, the book invoked memories; yet I was there during peace time and saw no war. I admired the character and also envied her. A great read. Hard to put down.

A great read! I could hardly put the book down. Characters are very well developed as well as the description of medic stations/hospitals and their staff during WWII. Exciting, thought provoking and heart warming.
