The story really picks up after Chapter 3. Just stick with it and it keeps getting better and better.

@LPL_KimberlyL If you liked this book, the other two books in this trilogy are excellent as well. Additionally, I REALLY loved this series on audiobook. Like REALLY REALLY loved it.

I also used the book club in a bag set of these books for my 11th grade students, and although this book was the largest (which turns off some students when they are choosing between books - but the ones who chose this one did not regret it).

This book snuck up on me. I liked it at first, but as I continued to read, I found myself wanting to spend more and more time with the characters, not wanting to let go. Finnikin is hot-headed, arrogant, and stubborn. Evanjalin is deceitful, spiteful, and cunning. Despite all of this, they are some of the best in high fantasy I have ever read. They are complex, three-dimensional, and deeply flawed (making them all that more interesting!). If you struggle in the beginning, I suggest you take a chance and keep reading. This book has a slow start, but the payout is more than worth it.

1st in a great series for teens and adults. Good choice for fans of Graceling.

I have some issues with the magic/curse parts, and I felt the climax was too short. All that preparation, all the angst and worrying and its's over in a couple of pages. The heroine, although badass, seemed to provide a solution to every problem which irked me. I also had some issues with the multiple POVs but...

I loved Finnickin. I loved that he accepted his role on his own terms and not under pressure. And mostly of all, I loved all the interactions he had with the people around him, family and strangers alike.

A compelling and dark fantasy - this is the first in a trilogy that I really enjoyed.

Vopinion: Love, love, love, LOVE this book!!!!!! Honestly, I know I have a soft spot for traditional fantasy, but this book is so well written! The plot is creative, the characters have depth and are very dynamic – love the different relationships that Marchetta has created! And of course, I have to say that I recently read book 2 in this series (again, I’m still hoping that it will be a trilogy) – Froi of the Exiles – and it was so good!!! CanNOT wait for the next book!!

Very good novel. However, Its dark and is not for the faint of heart. It is also very confusing.

Finnikin of the Rock - Lumatere Chronicles – book 1 was an enjoyable book to read but I found it a little slow to start. I did have numerous great laughs while reading this book at the same time as I listened to the book on CD. It’s a great way to sit back and relax. I do however recommend that some of the humour is more appropriate for older teenage readers. Doctor-at-Bass! T. A.

Sir Topher finally looked up. “Because any hope beyond that, my boy, would be too much. I feared we would drown in it.”
"Then I choose to drown,” Finnikin said. “In hope. Rather than float into nothing.
