Two men meet by accident on a bridge early one morning. Once they were best friends - but Tommy and Jim haven't seen each other for 35 years. Back then, Tommy and his sister were abandoned by their mother and later by their abusive father, and Jim, who lived alone with his religious mother, went to high school and became a socialist. Then one winter, Jim started to doubt whether he was deserving of the friendship. I Refuse follows both men during the course of the fateful day that follows.

This book, which explores the themes of time and friendship, carries a big emotional punch.

Very bleak and spare. The story of two broken men, estranged childhood friends, and damaged families.

It took me a while to get into this novel and at one point almost gave up- but I am glad I didn't. I found it rather absorbing and was drawn into the lives of the two main characters who had been inseparable friends as kids but hadn't seen each other for 30 years. Slowly their lives and hidden fears and problems are revealed in a series of flashbacks. Being translated from Norwegian I was totally unfamiliar with place names, environment and the overall physicality of the novel- but was not put off. Well worth the time.
