In 1919, only months after the end of the Great War, the men and women of Deseronto struggle to recover from wounds of the past, both visible and hidden. Kenan, a young soldier who has returned from the war damaged and disfigured, confines himself to his small house on the Bay of Quinte. His wife, attempting to adjust to the trauma that has changed their marriage, seeks advice from her Aunt Maggie. Maggie, along with her husband, Am, who cares for the town clock tower, have their own sorrows, which lie unacknowledged between them.

Set immediately after World War, this book focuses on returning soldier Kenan and his difficulty rue-entering a world marred by his injuries and psychological problems. It also focuses on. Maggie, a woman who comes alive while practicing for a Christmas concert, reviving her wonderful talent as a soprano. The book is a bit slow at times but each chapter unveils layer upon layer of each character’s past struggles. A quick read, especially in the summer.

I found the first 2/3 of the novel ho-hum, but as the long hidden feelings of the characters began to reveal themselves their stories became much more interesting. In the end, I did enjoy the book.

"I suppose that's the stuff we are made of, stories and journeys great or small, complete or incomplete, whatever gets passed on to us down the line."

Itani 'tells' well.
