Diamond --- by Matthew Hart. There’s a lot to be said about diamonds. And there’s a lot of it right here in this well written, precise book. Where do they come from and how are they made. From their origins as star dust to where are they mined. There are the stories of legend: the discoveries of stones in the rivers of Brazil; the Atlantic shores of Namibia; imperial South Africa; the blood diamonds of Central Africa; the stones of Australia; the Diamonds of India and Siberia and even of the Canadian Barrens. There are the stories of trade cartels every bit as vicious as the oil cartels. These are the stories of fortunes made and lost. Diamonds that appear and then disappear in history only to reappear later re-incarnated as yet another stone: tghe hope diamond is one such stone having started out as a diamond belonging to Louis XIV and them having last been seen during the French revolution. A book such as could easily have been twice the length, and certainly Hart could have been the one to write it. He has a most engaging way of telling his story that keeps you involved at all times. It avoids technicalities and liberally sprinkles the book with amusing anecdotes.
