An amazing book, with almost every page with spectacular photographs of animals that you probably had never seen before (except for the earlier edition).
From the inside flap it states: "The first edition, won the Outstanding Nonfiction Book of the Year Award for 2001 from the American Society of Journalists and Authors in 2002. Since then, a new era of ocean discovery has witnessed the first filming of the giant squid [off the coast of Japan in 2012], and submarine expeditions to the deepest underwater trenches on Earth. As a result of this growing momentum, five new species are being named every day, more than 2,000 a year. At the same time, the ocean is in trouble: Overfishing, industrial development and climate change are forcing many species to move, adapt or become extinct."
The Mariana Trench at Challenger Deep is deeper that the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest. If Everest were placed at the bottom of the trench, its peak would still be 7,000 feet (2,130 m), below the surface...more than 100 times the size of the Grand Canyon.

Impressively compiled by award-winning nature writer, Erich Hoyt - "Creatures of the Deep" is a truly fascinating visual-journey that takes us to the absolute bottom of the sea.

As we descend, layer-by-layer, into an ever-darkening ocean world - Hoyt introduces us to creatures, both beautiful and grotesque, of every size and description, who have adapted to a life far beneath the sun and waves.

Carefully weaving together details from the latest in scientific research - Hoyt offers us some excellent imagery to equally match the true awesomeness of his fantastic "deep sea" story of alien lifeforms.
