This is a bit of a weird one. A dark fantasy but with a bit of horror elements to it as well. Our main character is a woman named Carolyn who was 'adopted' by a powerful being known as Father when she was a child along with some others. Each child is known as a librarian and they each have one de... Read More »

A succession story in the vein of the Uranus-Cronus-Zeus myth, that is full of the unexpected. 23 years ago, Carolyn and 11 other children were "adopted" by Father, a godlike being whose vast library contains his 60,000 years worth of knowledge, and were tasked with mastering one field ... It's rare to read a book that is as intense as this.

It's equal parts engaging, creepy, funny, and filled with all kinds of hope. The story is definitely one of the more original ones I've read this year, with twists that I could never, ever, see coming.

No one is ever exactly what they seem, and that just makes them so much more compelling. Nothing was ever just black and white, and I love me some gray.

The storytelling is incredibly inventive, and ties together creatively at the end. However, it felt often like one of those books that was piling on weirdness for weirdness' sake.

Did not realize it was fantasy. I do not like fantasy or sci-fi, therefore did not finish.

As a huge fan of books with morally ambiguous main characters, I really liked this one. Without giving too much away, a group of unrelated orphans raised in secret by a man they call "Father" are locked out of the hidden library they were raised in. Someone has done something that prevents them from returning, and whats more, they can't contact "Father" and believe he may be dead. Which is perplexing to them because, as far as they can tell, "Father" was invincible and nearly omnipotent. The book begins with a dark tone that leads the reader to question everything that's happening. "Is Father dead, hiding, or something worst?", "Why did each librarian have to stick to a separate catalog?", "Was Father actually what they thought he was?" and "What's with that Steve character?" And that's just the beginning. This book is unlike anything else I've ever read. It has elements of Fantasy, Mystery, Comedy, Science Fiction, and even Horror. I strongly recommend it.

Imagine Hogwarts, but all the students are murderous librarians, their teacher is a god, and they're all at war to learn each other's secrets of the universe and become the next ruler. The story never goes where you think it'll go, and the villain/hero isn't who you think it'll be. Highly recommended.

You'll never known what's gonna happen next! This book is a true thriller. Story is quite bizarre but this is also it's charming point.

took me a couple of chapters to get into it but once you get into it, sheesh!

A dark, disturbing tale that is sure to appeal to horror fans who like a more cerebral, fantastical style of story.

LOVED it. This was recommended to me, being a fan of Harry Potter, cited as a dystopian Hogwarts run by a darker, more enigmatic Dumbledore. The characters are so singularly well crafted and the story, which I kept considering to be finished chapter after chapter, kept surprising me anew as it continued to spiral further. An amazing debut novel.

A very imaginative story about a group of children raised by a mysterious father figure. Father is cruel and god-like and his death or disappearance leaves a power vacuum. The story centers around quiet Carolyn whose area of study is languages. This makes her much more at home in the normal world than her siblings but the question is if this is enough to overcome threats not just from her siblings but from the outside world as well.

"Carolyn rose and stood alone in the dark, both in that moment and ever after."

"What we perceive as emotion is just a quick connection between three-dimensional space and one of the higher physical planes - rage, joy, pleasure, whatever. The repercussions can echo for years, but the actual link usually only lasts for a fraction of a second."
