Set in the dramatic landscape of Western Australia, Dirt Music tells the story of Luther Fox, a broken man who makes his living as an illegal fisherman--a shamateur. Before everyone in his family was killed in a freak rollover, Fox grew melons and counted stars and loved playing his guitar. Now, his life has become a "project of forgetting." Not until he meets Georgie Jutland, the wife of White Point's most prosperous fisherman, does Fox begin to dream again and hear the dirt music--"anything you can play on a verandah or porch," he tells Georgie, "without electricity." Like the beat of a barren heart, nature is never silent. Ambitious and perfectly calibrated, Dirt Music resonates with suspense, emotion, and timeless truths.

Dirt Music was full of breath taking surprises; from his beautiful poetic descriptions of both the land and the characters to the attention grabbing story line. His non traditional punctuation is refreshing. The first of his unique noves I've read and I plan to read more. Interesting.

A book about two lost souls. It provides a good sense of Western Australia, including the north. As usual from this author, a good book.

This book seemed to have a lot of potential initially, but the lack of punctuation was such a distraction that I couldn't concentrate on the story. I've read other Tim Winton novels and enjoyed them, but this one was dead in the water for me.

If you haven't read Tim Winton you're in for a treat. I've really liked everything I've read by him. He's poetic. He's not indulgent or self-conscious.

Tim Winton paints with fresh words. This was my first of his, and I was compelled forward and completely out of myself. He was able to impart a very real sense of danger as well as very strong connections between his characters.

Australians living in a tough environment...and man, does it get tough...who are real, flawed, passionate people. They stayed with me for a long time.
