For many westerners, African literature begins and ends with "Things Fall Apart" and "Cry, the Beloved Country." Which is too bad as there's a lot of great literature coming out of what is too often treated as a monolithic culture. "Nervous Conditions" is the debut novel by the Zimbabwean author Tsitsi Dangarembga. Like many African novels, it reckons with the legacy of colonialism and its impact on the people. This books is set in Rhodesia in the 1960s and takes its title from Frantz Fanon. I'd also recommend "Half of a Yellow Sun."
