It depicts the unconventional romance between two aristocratic sisters and a rebellious poet who took the European literary world by storm in the late eighteenth century. As the German Enlightenment flourishes in Weimar, vibrant Caroline von Beulwitz finds herself in an unhappy marriage to provide for her mother and shy younger sister Charlotte von Lengefeld. When both sisters fall for outspoken writer Friedrich Schiller, their desire ignites a journey of shared passion and creativity.

Quite tedious, does not stand the test of time

To call this the story of a 'threesome' (or even a 'ménage à trois', which is literally true) is bound to mislead, for the film evokes an 18th-century sensibility in which love and passion are the forces at play,, not sex (the bedroom scenes are brief and quite mild). The acting is good, the director's hand is light, and the film's recreation of small-town, rural Germany is a visual treat. This DVD has the director's cut which runs close to three hours: that is the one area for complaint, as the film starts to feel repetitive. (through there is a very nice visual towards the end that sums up the relationship of the three). Anyhow, be prepared for a long evening!

One of the best films I've seen this year. I usually get bored with period films but the story that incorporates the growth of printing and the French Revolution made it more interesting and added great impact on the film.

Interesting romantic drama set in 18th century Germany. Good but lengthy!
