Black Hawk Down" is a precise vision of how little war has changed in spite of America's high-tech equipment and extensive vocabulary of modern tactics.

Quite possibly one of the best movies ever made. It manages to follow multiple characters and their storylines (all of whom are in jeopardy and at risk of dying) without losing the emotional attachment you also feel for the locals who have this chaos drop in their city.

I have to say that they nailed this movie pretty well.
Basically all it does is tell the story of what happened in Mogadishu on October 3, 1993. They didn't focus on character detail that much which to me is a good thing. There are just too many people involved to go into detail with them all. Going into too much detail on certain characters and not others would take away what some did and would lessen their sacrifice. So, they stuck to just the story. Good move.
They compressed the story some, changed a few names, and merged some characters into one character This was done to get the story down to a movie time frame and to protect certain characters identities as they are still serving.
It's very accurate as far as weapons, equipment, uniforms, etc. They used the exact helicopters that were used in the original mission in 1993 with the 160th SOAR.

This is a 2001 British-American war film co-produced and directed by Ridley Scott, adapted from the book of the same name by Mark Bowden, which in turn based on a series of articles published in The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The 29-part series chronicled the events of a 1993 raid in Mogadishu by the U.S. military aimed at capturing faction leader Mohamed Farrah Aidid and the ensuing firefight, known as the Battle of Mogadishu.
In reality, the outstanding performance of the Pakistani troops under adverse conditions is very well known at the UN.
The film ignores the role of Malaysia and Pakistan in Somalia.
When U.S. troops were trapped in the thickly populated Madina Bazaar area of Mogadishu, it was the Seventh Frontier Force Regiment of the Pakistan Army that reached out and extricated them.
The filmmaker, however, depicts the incident as involving only Americans.
Although the film appears to be anti-war, it is at its core pro-war.
It depicts a shameful defeat, but the soldiers are represented as heroes who're willing to die for their brothers in arms.
The movie shows brutal scenes of killing, but also courage, stoicism and honor.
It seems to enhance the desire of Americans for a thumping war to avenge 9/11.

Well made movie. Difficult to watch. Be sure to watch the "on the set" extra included on the DVD. It is fascinating. It clearly explains why the U.S. troops were there & the goal of that specific mission. Actors didn't just show up & start filming. They put in a bunch of hours training with the military in preparation.

Yes; war is hell, so why do we do it? I have fought in battle and never will forget it, and I mean never. I soldiers who have should be our leaders in government, not the people who have never seen combat up close. It's easy when your ten thousand miles away telling people to die for you and your country. I got so close to death, I think maybe I did die, at least in spirit.

WoW! What a wild ride! This is a very powerful story that hardly anyone knows about. It takes place in Somalia where the US Military is sent to capture a terrorist leader that is starving thousands in Somalia. However, the mission goes seriously wrong and many American soldiers die. This is very powerful and hard to watch. I am fifteen and some of the violence was disturbing and made me cringe. Some people may not be able to handle this!

I have not the slightest doubt that this is a Great War Movie.
However, that being said, I can't help but think that in some future African-made version of this movie,.. its going to look like a re-telling of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, with the Americans portrayed as the Redcoats (?!?).
,...sometimes the version of what happened depends on the viewpoint of who's writing the "history". (6-30-14: 1)

This is an outstanding war movie. Graphic and realistic in its violence and depiction of the MOUT (Military Operations on Urban Terrain) warfare that occurred in Somalia. Nonstop. Gripping and entertaining. You almost can't believe it is a true story. You will never forget this film.

The performances are not remarkable but it is action packed. There is a good plot concerning the U.S' failure in Mogadishu in 1993.

Violence: Extreme! Men are shot with RPGs and guts and body parts fly everywhere. (This happens more than once.) A man gets shot in the neck and blood explodes on the camera (This happens at least twice.) These are just two examples of MANY! There are guts, brain matter, spraying/gushing/exploding, and lots of blood and wounds!

Coarse Language: Many uses of F*** I would say at least forty times. Other cusses are used also.
