This biography is a balanced, straightforward chronology of Miles' musical life, told in understandable terms. It provides insight into the process of producing studio recordings. Ellington called Miles the "Picasso of Jazz", and Szwed illustrates his genius and constant innovation. He also portrays Miles in terms of his abusive relationships with women and others and his obsessions with the material world.
