Roy Cooper, a stoic, unassuming "errand runner" for various New York criminals, arrives in Los Angeles just as a powerful earthquake throws the city into chaos. Still, Roy is able to get his hit job done well. Except for one thing: amid the chaos, he can't find his car. Helplessly lost in North Hollywood, he stumbles upon a jogger being beaten by four gangbangers, and, despite his best efforts, winds up in the middle of the fray. The jogger--a controversial mayoral candidate--is murdered. Roy ends up hospitalized in critical condition and is lionized--mistaken as a hero--when a video of the fight goes viral. Enter Kelly Maguire, an LAPD detective with an anger-management problem and an uneasy feeling about L.A.'s newest hero; Science, the teenage sociopath gangbanger/shooter who needs to keep Roy quiet about what he's seen; Albert, Roy's onetime mentor and one of the scariest, creepiest characters in recent crime fiction; and myriad criminals, politicians, and cops who need Roy to disappear--preferably forever.

Found this as a recommendation from one of my favorite authors on Twitter. It is quite the gritty mystery with a anti hero I just loved. Definitely a novel to be read

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. a change of pace from most crime fiction. I would like to see more of the Kelly charactor in all her disfunctional glory. Maybe the reader will see her get herself together, maybe not. Over all well written. I will read his next story.

The first part about Roy Cooper was different and interesting. Then there was a switch where the story revolved around a bunch of young thugs, speaking "their language", which I found hard to understand. What's more I didn't care. The woman detective Kelly seems thoroughly unpleasant. In summary, I found this book completely unpleasant with unlike able characters..

Good first novel-lots of bad guys and angry cops. The ending hints there may be a sequel.

Roy Cooper prefers to remain under the radar -- after all, he's a hit man, best utilized when no one knows he's coming. In L.A. for a job, Roy comes to the rescue of a jogger being terrorized by a group of street thugs, but he isn't able to prevent the man's murder -- or the video of the scene going viral when it becomes clear that the victim was a candidate for mayor. Roy's hero treatment doesn't please everyone though, including his employers, a suspicious cop, and a figure from Roy's past. Dark, violent, and with vivid characterization, this debut from screenwriter Scott Frank (Get Shorty) also offers a complex plot and cutting social commentary.
