A truly wonderful short story collection that brings to life the joys and struggles of the Filipino diaspora. Each story is rich and vivid and each character is unforgettable and completely real. Although Alvar's characters come from all walks of life and every layer of Filipino society from rich to poor, most of them do share the same characteristic of being self-sacrificing and hard working. However, every person in every story is full of surprises.

This is a beautiful book.

Wonderful set of stories that will definitely strike a chord with immigrants (or children of immigrants), or people familiar with Philippine culture. Solid writing. I personally loved it and have recommended it to many.

To me the book doesn't lives up to the acknowledgements/credits given at the back of it...

Charmed by her writing at first, became very repetitive soon. I have read other stories about the Philippines during the second world war that very interesting.

Solid writing with interesting stories that surprised me. I don't think I've ever read a book about Filipino people, their country and their lives. I liked the unselfconscious writing style and familiar way the author wrote about these characters. I've been recommending this to a lot of my reader friends.

Excellent book of short stories, well-crafted, interesting and provided much insight into the life of Phillipino workers. Really enjoyed it.
