In Let Loose the Dogs , Murdoch's life and work overlap tragically. His sister, who long ago fled to a convent to escape their abusive father, is on her deathbed. Meanwhile, Harry Murdoch, the father whom Murdoch long ago shut out of his life, has been charged with murder and calls on his estranged son to prove his innocence. Interesting historical context as always, who knew about dog fighting rats and death in the great Ravine graft, conterfiting and other crimes in Victorian Toronto. It is also an interesting intellectual exercise to try to solve crimes without the benefit of basic modern tools such as finger prints and balistic tests. Story feels very authentic and I enjoy the series. I would recommend it to anyone who can appreciate the historical Toronto setting.
