I made her Old-fashioned, Traditional Saskatoon Pie recipe this summer using freshly picked saskatoon berries from Mameo Beach. This was the best pie ever.

This book is wonderful! My grandma was a farm wife, and so many of these recipes remind me of her, as well as my aunts that still live in rural Alberta. The only recipe I was surprised not to see is Broken Glass Cake, a Prairie farm classic if you ask me!

This lavishly illustrated book took me right back to my early married years in rural Saskatchewan. Johnston's recipes include lots of traditional and modern approaches to saskatoon berries, butter tarts, and nanaimo bars. Her chapter on squares, bars, and slices reminds me of taking pans of treats to Handel Hall for showers, weddings, and the fall chicken supper. The photos of Pyrex and Fire King serving dishes reminded me that I had been gifted with the same items in harvest gold and old town blue as a bride. Her photo of a Ukrainian Orthodox church was identical to the churches I saw in small central Saskatchewan towns. This cookbook is a tribute to a place and time where families of British, German, and Ukrainian descent lived and worked together to grow wheat for a growing country.
