When Alice Fancourt returns home after having been out for the first time without her two-week-old daughter Florence, she insists that the baby she finds at home, in the care of her husband David, is not their daughter but a child she has never seen before. David denies it, claiming that the baby is Florence and that Alice has gone mad. Is she crazy, or is David lying, and if so, why would he do such a thing? And where is the real Florence? Alice has no proof, but she needs the police to believe her, and quickly. While they wait for the DNA test that will settle the matter, valuable time is being lost, and David's behaviour towards Alice becomes increasingly threatening and sinister. Can Alice make the police listen to her before it's too late?

A tediously told tale that features a monstrous mother-in-law, a cruel husband and an astonishingly dysfunctional and unethical team of police investigators. If only the writing or the plotting or a surprising central character could make up for that!

In the last part of the book, where the denouement is supposedly taking place, and the reader supposedly should be put in the mood-Oh, what a surprise! ", In reality put me in the mood -This is tedious and confusing. The book can be viewed as a version of “Gone girl”

English psychological thriller about a woman whose domineering stepmother threatens to tear her marriage and family apart. Overly long for an ending trying to explain the resoning for her actions.
Well written , engrossing and taut.

Not bad - a good beginning but it does get a little slow after a fast start and has a disappointing ending. But why is this an American edition with language and grammar mangled? I am confused as to why British authors have to suffer this treatment. Please, please buy British editions of British authors and not these dumbed-down versions.

Like other Sophie Hannah books, it hooks at the start, then gets rather tedious, though one wants to see how it ends.
