It opened my mind on the options for childbirth. The many stories on birthing naturally gave me tools that I ended up using during labour. Highly recommend.
VERY very very good book! Great for some terrified "epidural-only" mothers, provides a very nice and clear perspective of what women's body can do and explains it very nicely. Full of stories about positive experiences of child birth, and how natural it is if you prepare mentally for it, also explains what fear does and the purpose of pain. Highly recommended read!
What a treasure of empowerment and much needed information on natural birth. I skipped the birth stories at the beginning of the book but revisted them as my due date grew closer.
I started reading the birth stories during my first trimester and got so overwhelmed by it that I didn't even look at the book again until about a month before my son was born. It wasn't that the stories were bad, it was just that it was too much too soon.
When I went back to it, I skipped over them and went straight to what Ina May had to say about childbirth. I found it to be very reassuring and comforting as I prepared for my labor and delivery. It gave me some useful tools to use when things got serious (transition). I focused on relaxing and opening up, just like she talked about, and what do you know, it worked! I went from 4 to 10cm in one hour. I was able to do it the way I wanted and I wasn't at all freaked out about it because after reading this book, I knew it was all normal. That's not to say I had a painless childbirth experience, I just knew that we were both ok and we were totally prepared and capable. That made things a lot easier to deal with.
I definitely credit this book with putting me in a good frame of mind about labor and delivery and I'm glad I read it! I have since loaned it out to all my pregnant friends.
Good Book. Lots of stories about birthing experiences...some not quite so realistic. Part II of the book was much more helpful in preparing you for what you can expect.
Recommended reading for women preparing for childbirth. I loved it, I felt informed and empowered going into childbirth. I had a great childbirth experience, can't say it was because of the book (Great support and LUCK!) - and it was long and hard, but also great, normal and amazing. However, I do think the book helped me mentally prepare. (and Doula - hire a Doula!)
Great book! I was terrified of having a baby and this book prepared me and empowered me to have a unmedicated, natural childbirth. Helps you realize that you have options doctors may not know about. Ina May - U.S.'s most well-known midwife - celebrates a woman's ability to do the unthinkable! Definite read for a woman contemplating or wanting a natural childbirth.
Good book with some great stories about natural childbirth but not as straight forward as I had hoped. I was looking for more teaching and practical tips.
