I loved this book and waited for a chance to read it in storytime. THE KIDS WERE HELD RAPT. They didn't budge or say much while I read it, but had SO much to say when it was over and we discussed it. This was a big hit, and I'll definitely be reading it again in the future. It's a great jumping off point if you're doing a themed storytime on colors, art, individuality, differences, or something related.

The illustrations are beautiful and the text expresses the ways in which art is within everyone's reach.

I have mixed feelings about this book. How we talk to kids about art profoundly influences their comfort level/appreciation/willingness to participate in it!

How did this skilled illustrator Felicita Sala not contest the messaging in this book by Adam Lehrhaupt. The "examples" of "bad drawings" are not bad at all they're great! I dislike the portrayal of the smug "good drawer" surrounded by admiring and or passive kids NOT drawing, and one kid drawing "badly". The conversation about art needs to change! Adults need to stop saying they are bad drawers themselves, which is easily repeated by children who hear this harmful rhetoric.

A young boy cannot draw to his satisfaction but he can colour. His colours express all his emotions - happiness, sadness, etc. A great way to teach colours and that we do not have to do whatever everyone else does to be special.
