Just one question.

How does this series keep getting better!?

Monstress continues to be a Dark Fantasy that doesn't shy away from the "dark" part of the equation. Questions of how war affects people, what makes someone a monster, what crimes should be committed if it could save the world, and who is trustworthy, really make you reflect inwards after reading. Maika doesn't have much time to think about things like this. As usual, she is driven towards the goal she has set regardless of the consequences. We do get to see a new side of her character though, when she meets someone from her past that took care of her. You just can't help but love these characters, flaws and all. Alongside this cast, the rich lore continues to shine, and begins to reveal just how intricately tied it is to the story. The mystery and political intrigue also deepened in this volume. Some of Liu's best ideas can actually open up your mind to notions you had never thought of before, such as the idea of people being called a "goddess-father" rather than a "godfather". Then there is the art. The ethereal quality that looks like it came straight out of lore gets to show off some new sides to it, as Maika and company travel to an isle of a dead god. Volume two exceeds the high standard that the first set, and raises our anticipation for the next.
