Part one of a trilogy pre-dating the screening of Downton Abbey but containing a similar mix of characters from the upper and lower classes of Edwardian England. The future of the Cresswell family home in Devon and the fortunes of the sons and an unmarried daughter hang in the balance as the family patriarch, Sir Mortimer, hovers on the point of death and seems unable to rid himself of the influence of his extravagant second wife.
