This is a pilates dvd with Lara Hudson. Lara is the perfect example of why I prefer yoga over pilates--her core is tight but she's quite large on her lower half and tiny on the top. With yoga you're more even. This workout consists of five different 10 minute workouts, but I didn't really like any of them. The last one, flexibility, was mostly yoga stretches. Supposedly you're supposed to be able to "program" your own workout but it does not work with this dvd.
Lara is motivating and inspiring. You can choose from five workouts that target different areas and do as much as you want: you can do one, a few, or all in one workout. Two-pound dumbbells are suggested for the sculpting workout, but I didn't have any so I just used some books and still felt the burn. The instructor gives modifications for some of the exercises so you can do an easier or harder version.
Lara is easy to follow and is very positive. The workouts are challenging and seem pretty true to the Pilates method. Hand weights of about 2 pounds are useful for the sculpting segment. Like all the 10-minute solutions videos, it's easy to choose how many segments you want to do and put them in your desired order each time you use the DVD.
Personally, I really don't like Pilates but I "try" to incorporate some because I know of its benefits...especially for the abs. I like this DVD because it's not grueling, but allows you to target certain trouble areas. Plus, the choreography is not too difficult...I just wish I was much more flexible in certain parts though.
Lara Hudson is an inspiring, straightforward instructor, and the exercises in this video are challenging for me even when I feel I am in pretty good shape. To watch the instructor pull off the hardest moves while talking the whole time always impresses me. I feel this is a well balanced collection of Pilates exercises.
