We must have missed something in our viewing, in our view it was ridiculously predictable. Characters were not close to providing real actions of their role. Women were portrayed weak and stupid. And, there was so much irrelevant and unbelievable filler.

If you like naked bodies for the sake of just continuous viewing and copulating , this movie may provide something for you. -Tlc

A very personal epic that goes through four decades of Germany history from the 30s to the 60s. It follows the sweeping journey of young artist Kurt Barnert and his relationship with art and how various forms of dictatorships try to control art to tell their truths as he struggles for freedom to tell his own truth. The film is quite long at 3hrs but it seem to fly by and despite almost falling into melodrama the director seems to find a way to weave the story into something grander where love, life, art history, politics and ghosts from the past all converge into a form of divine creation of something eternal and lasting. This is the kind of compelling filmmaking that Martin Scorcese would use in comparison to superhero amusement park rides.

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen, and I've seen many. The acting, the cinematography, the music, the story-they were all wonderful. Highly recommended.

Subtitles be damned, this is perfect example of excellent filmmaking. Highly recommended.

Beautiful awesome movie. One of the best I've seen! Gave me a lot to think about art. I kept expecting the father to suffer for his crimes and I kept expecting the boy to find out his father-in-law's role in his aunt's death. Things were just left up in the air....it's like he never knew what his best painting really meant. Disappointed about that. But I loved the movie!

This was a long movie! As with many forgien films nudity is part of the story. Some of my grandmothers siblings ended up in East Germany. The under current of that time was insightful. This was quit a story.

Yes, I agree with WOW. Viewed this with no expectations except years of knowing the evils of the little man and his foul followers. Pure evil so well played by Sebastian Koch - I kept waiting for the hammer of justice to fell him. The other actors were believable as is the historic facts. I used to wonder how all the German populace could be bewitched by this little man, then I came to understand it was life or death for each by the regime or by their own hand. I've had trouble with blanket forgiveness, rather case by case, with much trepidation. At this point in my life I am afraid it can happen again.

Depending on the maturity of younger viewers I'd comment on the very honesty of the body filming. Little is left to wonder about. Based on personal experience, my 13 year old child was educated about this era and the inequality of visible appearance with regard to skin tone, body shapes, others beliefs. Years & years ago and I've never been sorry to have allowed this freedom.

Dramatization inspired by life of artist Gerhard Richter set against Nazi era in Germany, then post-war Soviet controlled East Germany, then post-war West Germany. One aspect involves complicity of physicians under Nazis in extermination of mentally ill/challenged individuals to "purify" the Aryan race. Also touches on Berlin Wall construction in 1961, Nazis escaping punishment post-war, etc. Period authenticity, such as Shirelles' "Boys" blasting in art school. 2019 Oscar nominated for best foreign film, cinematography. Excellent acting, good subtitles.
