A wonderful collection of quirky and strange stories that made me laugh (and also cringe.) I took this on a long road trip and my travel companion and I took turns reading it out loud ~ better than any audio book! After enjoying this collection so much I looked into Tower's other writing and discovered he is an author who was exploitative and seemingly unapologetic about it, which I found to be really disappointing. For that reason I don't think I'll be able to pick up another book by him without feeling critical of his voice, but I have to admit I'm glad I had the chance to read this beforehand.

The guy's got a great name and this is a cool title, but this stories are just not that engaging. But, hey, Vikings.

A weariness inhabits these characters and stories, yet Tower is an engaging and clever enough writer that they all crackle along.
The Viking story is a bit silly, but very necessary.
Great collection, would suggest Tower has the potential to sit with Lethem and Saunders, should they all go out to lunch or whatever.

These short stories are about families. They are funny, especially the one about Vikings. A New Yorker style writer.

Richly deserving of all the hype. Towers ratchets up more suspense in the frame of one literary short story than you'd find in a dozen thrillers combined. "Retreat" was my favorite. You're in good hands here, hands with a very solid grip.
