After Leonard moves back into the home he grew up in to mend a broken heart, he meets two women in quick succession. Michelle is a mysterious and beautiful neighbor. Sandra is the lovely and caring daughter of a businessman who is buying out his family's dry-cleaning business. Leonard is forced to make an impossible decision, between desire and the comfort of love, or risk falling back into the same darkness that nearly killed him.

Two Lovers is interesting and entertaining enough; but not great. I didn't quite buy into it but I did enjoy Phoenix's character, especially at certain points. I'd say worth a watch if you like movies that can at least hold your attention for the duration.

movie is slowish - but life is like that. disliked him, and my heart went out to the dark haired girl for wanting to save him.

Two women - one glamourous golden-haired and not playing all her cards, the other brunette and showing all her cards. Creepy ending -- a practical decision based on the lead needing a steady boat. Troubling.

A decent melodrama, marred only by a middling script that could have used some sharpening, and miscasting Joaquin Phoenix in the lead. This last is plausible in that the character is intense, troubled and bi-polar, but what doesn't quite wash with any conviction is the charming part: the step-aside-and-watch-this break-dancing, how he presumably engulfs the carload of ladies with his engaging rap, etc. Even so, there's much to recommend this, including Paltrow's predictably competent work as a needy but muddled woman who offers little, and especially the way the plot is, against the odds, wrapped up tidily in the end.

I liked the tension between the organized and the chaotic in this film. I think that Michelle represents both the ecstasy and the deep depression that is bi-polar disorder.
Leonard must find a balance between the two in order to survive.

A poignant moment in the film happens when Leonard's mother lets him go to do what he needs to do, and is supportive when he gets back (no spoilers, sorry!). You can tell that she has done this many times before.

The performances are excellent, but there's a credibility problem. The director wrote the screenplay loosely basing it, he said, on a story by Dostoevsky, and indeed it might have been more plausible set a century or so earlier when women attached themselves to men to solve problems or please their parents far more readily than they do now. Joaquin Phoenix's sensitive portrayal of Leonard, who is bi-polar and recovering from a lost relationship, makes this worth watching though, despite the film's shortcomings.

Very slow and very boring. Leonard is a loser.
