"Meet Duncan. Charming and brave, he's the Princess's favorite-- and he's on his way to winning the throne. But lately, the walls of reality in Duncan's kingdom are wearing a little thin-- -- Meet Gran'pa Greenbax. Nothing seems to satisfy this greedy old frog's longing for a pool full of gold-- until, one day, a mysterious smile appears in the sky. Has his chance at happiness come at last? -- Meet Janet. Her nine-to-five life takes a turn for the romantic when she learns in an email from a mysterious Nigerian prince that she has been chosen to liberate his family's vast fortune. All he needs is her banking information. In three very different stories, master storytellers Gene Yang and Derek Kirk Kim pit fantasy against reality, for good or for ill" -- cover leaf.

A quick read, but one that takes time to digest to appreciate fully. The three stories are a great springboard for discussion!

Quick reads and very enjoyable. I liked the first two stories better than the third - I like the surprising twists at the end of each one.

The stories were cute!...and that's about it. =/ Not a whole lot of ground-breaking work here. I really enjoyed the first story though, I thought it had an interesting plot/concept, and it had painful realistic elements to it that people overlook sometimes. The second story was a bit too cartoony and surreal for my tastes, though I have to admit the twins were pretty cute. I really wanted to like the last story...but the resolution for it just isn't compelling enough for me. =( I liked the protagonist, she was sweet, shy, and relatable to real-life people. But I guess I just didn't like her justifications for stuff. And it's a shame too, because I thought the artwork for the last story was super cute, especially the image of the prince. I also don't understand why the book is called "The Eternal Smile". I'm not sure how the title/theme relates to all the stories.

Three curious short stories demonstrate illustrator Derek Kirk Kim's visual versatility, as well as author Gene Luen Yang's love of narrative twists. Not sure if it adds up to anything greater, though.

An easy read just as easily not read.

The morals from the three diferent stories are pretty over-handed and cliched. I feel like we readers are talked down to and I expected more from Gene Luen Yang especially after his first book. Derek Kirk Kim shows that he's a versatile artist with three different styles but only the third comic's style held my interest. He managed to connect more with less effort in his Same Difference collection.

These short stories are writen for kids. I've heard the messages all before; be true to yourself, stand up for yourself, don't seek hapiness in suplerficial things, etc, etc. I know 'kids' have heard all of this before and I felt these ususally strong writer/artists were condesending and trying too hard to please.
