oh ho ho ho -- ASOKA, the film that killed my interest in Bollywood films for a decade or so. You see, I hadn't seen any -- so I was not prepared for this characterless, nearly story-less dance-a-thon, essentially a drawn-out series of music videos. Nobody shines except the costumes and rapid camera cuts, and the very slight amount of plot is held to the end -- making a film which seems curiously both too short [what, it's over?] and too long [I had to wait through that many songs for this?]. You might enjoy the dancing though.

This is a 2001 Indian epic historical drama directed and co-written by Santosh Sivan.
It is a dramatised version of the early life of Emperor Asoka of the Maurya dynasty, who ruled most of the Indian subcontinent in the 3rd century BCE.
Emperor Chandragupta Maurya, grandfather of Asoka, has decided to embrace Jainism and abdicate the throne of the empire in-favour of his son Bindusara.
But his grandson, Prince Asoka, claims his sword.
The old emperor explains that this sword is evil and the sword demands blood and destruction.
A terrible war is fought in Kalinga.
The Maurya army inflicts a crushing defeat on Kalinga.
Not content with mere victory, Maurya soldiers butcher everyone in sight.
The film ends with Asoka throwing the sword at the same spot his grandfather had thrown it and embracing Buddhism.

Brilliant epic loosely based on legends of Emperor Asoka from the 3rd century BC. A bit over-long, with the mandatory musical numbers, but overall a powerful and very compelling story.

Action, drama, romance, this movie was quite entertaining and brings a "loose" account of a great leader in India and the world.
