This was much better for me than Cinder. I liked Cinder, don't get me wrong, but this story was much more developed IMO. Scarlet was a fantastic character. She was witty and loyal and didn't pretend to be something she wasn't. I loved the twist on the fairy tale base here with her working alongside Wolf to save Grandma instead of being adversaries. And Wolf....how I loved Wolf. His inner struggles that we only get to glimpse but can clearly feel were a great part of this story. I loved the characters strong, dangerous flair while still being a bit awkward around Scarlet. It fit the character and made him relate able and charming in his shy way. I do feel that the trust/relationship developed a bit quickly but I can suspend disbelief considering the circumstances. I am just hoping that in the other books in this series the bond is developed deeper between them. Cinder had a lot of growth in here. She is coming to terms with her identity and trying to find a path forward, but she isn't jumping to forget her beginnings. I liked that she struggled with the use of her gift. That she felt torn about how to employ it, and whether to employ it. Thorne was fun for me as well though I wish we got a bit more from him. Hopefully in the next book we'll get to explore his personality a bit more and dive into his cocky attitude.
