Such a strange book...it starts off by throwing you into a world that makes no sense but with a tantalizing mystery: "Who is 'Father' and what happened to him?" It captivated me with its multi-faceted characters and evocative writing. It kind of reminded me of American Gods because of the god-like characters fighting for power and because of the constant out of this world, wacky things that happen. However, the world that Hawkins built is 100% creative, yet raw and violent. The element that most intrigued me about the story is the role of the 'librarians', it's completely different to what we expect when we hear the word. In this book, the librarians personify the concept of 'knowledge is power' in a most fantastical way! The only drawback is that I wish more of the story took place inside the library itself. For a book about a library, most of it was spent outside the library and I would have loved more in-depth descriptions.
