Paul Newman classic! A decorated war veteran turns to petty crime/mischief and ends up on the chain gang in some Southern prison. Paul Newman is excellent in this film and there are several memorable scenes - especially the egg eating contest! Great group of actors; George Kennedy (won best supporting actor academy award), Harry Dean Stanton, Ralph Waite and Dennis Hopper, but Newman is the star. As someone in the bonus extras says the story is about an alienated man who becomes an existential hero - great summary. Cool Hand Luke never quits or gives up, he inspires and invigorates his fellow prisoners. He frustrates his prison "bosses" and there is always a "failure to communicate." Great film if you have never seen it and even better if it has been a long while since you've seen it.
