The sentences are short. The paragraphs are short. The chapters are short. Is this medieval action/torture/thriller for adult reluctant readers? Those who believe that violent revenge on bad baddies is the height of humanity may find the numerous torture scenes uplifting. Patterson is popular and immune to my pan. Apart from a few "jokes" there is no jester here. Try Jester Leaps In, or Christopher Moore's Fool, or Robin Hobb's Tawny Man Series (starting with the Golden Fool), or Dumas' Chicot, the Jester, or Shakespeare's King Lear... Unless you like your prose light and your violence intense...
