This story of a young man from the wrong side of the tracks who finds and keeps a newborn baby is rich in characters, plot, and setting. It includes snippets from the life of a wealthy young woman coming of age during WW II, now 80 years old, family secrets, various nuanced relationships, illicit love, deep grief, and hope. From the opening scene where we watch as an unnamed boy and girl drive up to an old mansion, leave a newborn in a box by the garage door, and drive away we know we are in the hands of a master storyteller. In telling this particular story the author gives us a wider vision of the shape a life can take. The lens moves in and out; all elements of the novel come together to give the reader a lovely, moving experience.
