In the second of the Shapes trilogy, Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen turn to the square, who is a bit of a square in terms of personality. Square works in a cave Minecraft style, cutting out perfectly four-sided blocks, and moving them up the hill. This is his job and the totally of his purpose. But then along comes Circle, who believes that he is doing something more extraordinary. The floating, round ball, actually believes he is a genius sculptor, and requests one to be made in her likeness. What follows is a personal crisis, as Square tries to make something "perfect". As with their other collaborations, Square is funny with very engaging dialogue, and the illustrations say volumes about what the writing is leaving unsaid. This one also gives readers pause at the end, making us think about the nature of creative "genius" works.
